Take care of your eyes, they are the only organ that allows us to see how beautiful our planet is.
It is true that with the arrival of Summer, campaigns tend to intensify to alert the population about the risk of spending too much time in the sun without protection, but in countries like Spain and Australia where the solar radiation is so strong, we must protect ourselves at any time, even in Winter.
The reason why we are writing this post is to make you aware that sunscreen is very important to prevent skin cancer. However, most people do not consider eye protection as essential when it comes to preventing this type of cancer.
Actually, one of the most frequent reasons for consultation at the Ophthalmologist is palmar tumors, these injuries being both benign and malignant, located on the skin that covers both eyelids. "They constitute between 80% and 90% of cancers of the periorbital region", (Dr. Sonia Jannet Hincapié, specialist in ophthalmology and subspecialist in oculoplastic surgery).
The appearance of these tumors is more common in older people, with light skin and eyes, as well as those who have been subjected to prolonged exposure to the sun. However, about 90% of these lesions are benign, usually warts or cysts that generally do not pose any danger. As for malignant tumors, less frequent but much more dangerous, the most common is basal cell carcinoma, which constitutes 90% of eyelid tumors.
- Excessive exposure to the sun during childhood, the eyelids are one of the body parts with thinner skin.
- Low sun protection in the most sensitive areas.
- Lack of awareness about the growth of the hole in the ozone layer.
- Application of sunscreen also on the eyelids. - Use of sunglasses, no matter the time of the year or if there is sun or shade. - Use of lenses with dark crystals that better block sunlight, making sure the protection is grade 3 (from 0 to 4 being grade 4 essential for skiers). - Use of caps or hats if you are going to be exposed to the sun for many hours.
